Painting Parenting 101

Congratulations on your new arrival! You have purchased the first — a one and only original oil painting. It showcases the best the artist's technique and dimension and will keep its true colors for years and years if properly maintained.

In the lifetime of an original oil work of art, this painting is just in its life's beginning. Like any new "baby" it will require special care in the first year of life.

Most importantly, understand that although it looks and feel dry to you (don't touch!), this painting will not be cured for up to a year. This is due to the nature of oil paint and the mediums used; linseed oil, oil of spike (lavender from Italy) and possibly dammar.

Properly care for your new baby by hanging it away from direct light — especially sunlight. Remember that artificial lights may be harmful too. Direct easel or "painting lamps" are a definite no-no. If you must use these, cast the direct light of the bulb past the face of your painting.

Right now your new painting is an uncoated, unvarnished entity. It likes it like that. It can breathe properly while it is drying. When it is dry, it should be varnished. Varnish will seal the paint surface, unify and beautify the surface, brighten colors and provide some UV filtration and protect it from dirt. It will also protect the surface from insect dirt.

When cured, it is important that your painting be varnished with a proper oil painting varnish — easily available in art supply stores. These varnishes are always applied with a brush. They are not really expensive and will lengthen the life of your investment.

Until the painting is cured and varnished, it is advisable to not frame it. Especially with a frame that touches the surface or face of the painting. This is really a blessing in disguise because you can hang it in your home, unframed, and let time help you decide the proper frame for your art and home. Framing, even on sale, is costly and influences the integrity of the piece. Living with your painting for a while before deciding upon the frame is a great idea.

Don't carry the painting around by the hanging wire. Doing so allows for a lot of bouncing and most painting damage happens because of improper handling. Handle the painting by holding both sides and lean it up against a wall. do not lay it down flat on a surface to avoid handling accidents.

Keep your certificate of authenticity in a safe place away from the painting for home insurance purposes.

Do not use any water or cleaning solutions on your painting at any time.
