About the Artist, Nancy J. T. Massoll

A Michigander all her life, Nancy earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts and teaching certificate from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  She has taught, studied, practiced and traveled to see Fine Arts ever since. While teaching Art Education full time at Huron High School, she completed her M.Ed L. from Saginaw Valley State University. She maintains a busy schedule by balancing creating art, working and traveling while raising her young daughters, Charlotte and Carolyn. She says she could not do all this without the loving support of her husband,Charles.

Nancy has taught foundation drawing, painting and ceramics at every school age, from kindergarten to adult education at the Flint Institute of Arts. She finds that there is simply no way for her to pick a favorite age of student to work with. For her it would be similar to picking a favorite color or medium- it just can not be done! With a strong belief that art is an expression of self and culture which can best be learned by viewing first hand, Nancy has led student art tours all over the U.S.A., Canada and Europe. She sees this as an extension to teaching, a way to open the world to kids through art. Her enthusiasm and love for her philosophy “live through art” shine through; her school district has honored her with the “Huron Teacher of the Year” award for the secondary level in 2007.

Nancy has worked part time for over 14 years as a freelance internationally published cartoonist, illustrator and Art Director from her home studio. She has completed magazine ads and newspaper illustrations. In addition to working in oil paint for the plein air “altered impressionism” style for the charming cities she lives near in South East Michigan, she works on portraits and the multi leveled oil painting style of the Flemish artists.

Her work has been shown in the public gallery at the Flint Institute; currently her work is on display at the Aubergine Gallery in Milford, Michigan.  She is part of “The Artists Project” a published work by artists Pas which showcases The Artists of Huron Valley and was published in the Fall of 2007. Nancy has been invited to be a guest “En plein air” artist for street fairs and other galleries in Michigan.
